Periodontal disease is not just dental disease! According to statistics, more than 90% of Chinese people have varying degrees of periodontal disease, but they do not know the harm that periodontal disease does to the body. They think that dental disease only causes missing teeth at most. Professional dentists warn that this misconception cannot be changed! Domestic and foreign studies have long proven that leaving rotten teeth unchecked will affect your health. Severe periodontal disease is associated with diabetes, kidney disease, cardiovascular disease and migraines, and even increases the risk of cancer.
Based on his many years of experience in treating periodontal patients, Ye Liwei, the director of Modern Dental Clinic, accurately pointed out that the reason why nine out of ten Taiwanese suffer from periodontal disease is that most people underestimate the dangers of periodontal bacteria and do not develop the habit of regular dental check-ups.
Ye Liwei said that periodontal disease is not only the main cause of missing teeth in the Chinese people, but also has negative effects throughout the body. First of all, oral health and diabetes control affect each other. Periodontal disease will increase insulin resistance in diabetic patients and interfere with the normal decline of blood sugar, making it more difficult to control diabetes.
On the contrary, periodontal disease is also recognized as one of the complications of diabetes. Because diabetic patients have poor periodontal repair and wound healing capabilities, the risk of periodontal disease is three times that of the average person.
Chronic kidney disease, diabetes and periodontal disease also have a special triangular relationship. Ye Liwei mentioned that British research found that chronic kidney disease patients with periodontal disease have a 10% increased risk of death. Long-term chronic inflammation is considered to be the main cause of this association, and about half of chronic kidney disease patients are caused by diabetes.
Periodontal disease has a serious impact on the cardiovascular system. Ye Liwei pointed out that long-term chronic inflammation in the mouth will indirectly destroy the inner wall of blood vessels. If oral bacteria invade blood vessels, the bacteria will directly infect and destroy the blood vessel walls, increasing the risk of atherosclerosis, heart disease, heart failure, and stroke. Some studies have also suggested that people with periodontal disease will increase the risk of breast cancer and may be associated with melanoma, malignant tumors of the head and neck, gallbladder, lungs, stomach, and liver.
Ye Liwei emphasized that the best way to prevent periodontal disease is to maintain correct oral hygiene and go to the dentist for regular check-ups. If there are problems, timely treatment should not be delayed. Generally, the periodontal condition can predict whether a person is "vibrant and healthy" or "sick and aging." The common cause of missing teeth before the age of 30 is mostly caused by tooth decay. However, after the age of 40, the rate of missing teeth due to periodontal disease is getting higher and higher. Chronic inflammation for a long time will accelerate aging. Therefore, if you want to slow down aging, you must find ways to maintain oral health and extend the life of your teeth.
