Dentures (dentures) can be divided into two categories: fixed and removable. However, how people choose between fixed and removable dentures is a big question. Recently, Zhou Huanjue, a denture prosthodontist at Modern Dentist Digital Implant Center, pointed out that making fixed or removable dentures depends on many factors, including the condition of the soft and hard tissues in the mouth and the remaining tooth texture, the occlusion condition, and facial assessment, such as face shape, facial smile, temporomandibular joints, and masticatory muscles. After a detailed examination, the dentist will develop a treatment plan based on the patient's condition to meet the patient's individual needs.
Regarding the advantages and disadvantages of fixed and removable dentures, Zhou Huanjue said that generally speaking, fixed dentures are more convenient for patients to use, have stronger bite function, and do not need to be removed every day, but they must be supported by teeth or dental implants, and the cost is usually higher. Common materials include all-ceramic, metal or metal-fired porcelain. All-ceramic crowns look more natural and beautiful, while all-metal crowns are less beautiful but less likely to break.
As for removable dentures, they are made of reinforced resin, metal brackets and artificial teeth. The disadvantages of removable dentures are that they are troublesome and have a foreign body sensation. They have to be removed and cleaned after three meals. Their bite force is smaller than that of real teeth, making it more difficult to bite hard food. However, the advantage is that they are usually cheaper than fixed ones, can be removed and cleaned, and are easier to maintain.
As for the cleaning methods of the two types of dentures, Zhou Huanjue said that the cleaning method of fixed dentures is just like ordinary teeth, using the Bethesda brushing method and dental floss. If some dentures are bridges and the floss cannot be threaded through, you can use super dental floss to clean from the bottom, or use an interdental brush to clean the bottom of the bridge. The way to clean removable dentures is usually to take them out after eating and use a soft-bristled toothbrush or a toothbrush specially designed for dentures. However, do not use toothpaste to prevent the abrasives in it from damaging the surface of the dentures. But the most important thing is that no matter what kind of dentures are used, patients need to return to the dentist for regular check-ups to avoid missing the golden opportunity for treatment.
After dentures are made, regular follow-up visits are required. The gums will gradually shrink with the missing teeth, causing the removable dentures to not fit properly. At this time, the removable dentures need to be readjusted. Regular follow-up can also check the condition of other teeth in the mouth. If there are problems, they can be dealt with early to avoid them becoming serious and spending more time and money to solve the problems.
