Many people don’t know that they need to go to the dentist’s office every six months to clean their teeth and check the health of their teeth and gums. As a result, they only register for treatment if they feel sore teeth and swollen gums. At this time, they may already have severe tooth decay, periodontal disease, or even gum recession and other symptoms.
Ye Liwei, the director of Modern Dental Clinic of Modern Dental Medical System, is a periodontal specialist and dental implant specialist with rich experience in periodontal disease treatment. He mentioned that in addition to patients with periodontal disease in the outpatient clinic, it is also common for patients to come in for check-ups because they feel their teeth are sore. He analyzed that apart from tooth decay, the most common causes of tooth soreness are “sensitive teeth” or “dentin sensitivity”. The characteristic is that when teeth encounter temperature changes, acidic foods, sweets, brushing, air blowing, or changes in local osmotic pressure, they will experience pain and discomfort, which is mainly caused by exposure of dentin or tooth roots.
Ye Liwei shared a case where he examined a patient who was very uncomfortable due to sore and sensitive teeth many years ago. The intraoral and X-ray examination revealed that the rate of tooth decay was very high. The patient's past experience was that he was very afraid of the pain and discomfort during dental visits, so even though the upper left molar had been decayed and only the remaining root was left, he still put off dealing with it until he had to deal with it.
In addition to many cavities, gum recession and exposed tooth roots may be the cause of tooth sensitivity and soreness. In addition to diagnosing dental caries, periodontal probes and X-rays are also used to specifically examine the patient's periodontal condition for potential risks. The diagnosis was mild periodontitis throughout the mouth, so the symptoms of tooth soreness and sensitivity were improved. Regular calculus removal was performed every six months and oral hygiene education was improved. The patient successfully completed periodontal maintenance.
Subsequent dental caries and root canal treatments were performed on the front teeth to repair the missing teeth and cavities. After removing the roots of the left upper back teeth, she chose to use a traditional dental bridge to restore the function. The cavity on the first molar on the left lower jaw was previously filled with silver powder, and there was a secondary cavity on the edge. After this removal, it was completely restored using 3D tooth carving.
Ye Liwei patiently treated or filled the cavities one by one, and gradually restored the patient's confidence in dental treatment. He specially reminded that dental treatment usually takes a long time and the number of appointments is high. If you give up halfway, or feel that your condition has improved slightly or other factors, just leave the remaining problems alone. On the contrary, this will make small problems that can be solved in a few visits become more and more serious. You must return to the clinic on time and regularly.
Five years later, the patient's dental caries on both sides of the lateral incisors became larger and the base of the right incisor became inflamed and the alveolar bone was destroyed. This was caused by the tooth decay reaching the nerve and the infection spreading to the root tip after the nerve became inflamed and necrotic. After the four upper front teeth underwent root canal treatment, Ye Liwei used all-ceramic crowns to restore them. The patient was very satisfied with the results of the treatment. Half a year later, ceramic veneers were installed on the canine teeth and the first molar on both sides to make the color more consistent.
Ye Liwei explained that using digital dental technology, the treatment of all-ceramic crowns and dentures can be quickly completed. This restoration treatment made full use of the advanced digital dental equipment in the clinic, and the dental treatment process was carried out digitally from modeling, design to production. Including digital oral scanning, digital all-ceramic design, digital grinding machine, and the designed files are directly output to the digital grinding machine to make restorations. He emphasized that the above equipment and technologies require a certified professional team with professional licenses to operate and master them.
