Do you envy others for having healthy and beautiful teeth? According to statistics from the National Health Insurance Administration of the Ministry of Health and Welfare, among the top five overall medical expenditures of Chinese people in 2018, major dental diseases include periodontal and tooth decay-related diseases, ranking third and fourth, with a total amount of more than 33.8 billion yuan. Combined, it exceeds the cost of diabetes in second place. Ye Liwei, director of Contemporary Dental Clinic, pointed out that there is still room for improvement in Taiwanese people's health care concepts towards dental and periodontal health.
Ultimately, the cause of periodontal disease and tooth decay is dental plaque, and periodontal disease actually refers to the inflammation of tissues surrounding teeth such as gums, periodontal ligament, and alveolar bone. Mainly due to poor oral hygiene or incorrect cleaning methods, periodontal bacteria, dental plaque, tartar, and food residue accumulate around the teeth. Plaque calcifies to form dental calculus, which makes it easier for a large number of bacteria to adhere to the surface. It is difficult to clean just by brushing and flossing, and requires professional removal by a dentist. Proper brushing and flossing in daily life, regular teeth cleaning, and cleaning of plaque, calculus or dirt on the tooth surface are the most critical first steps in preventing periodontal disease.
"Regular dental and oral examinations are very important!" Ye Liwei said that as long as there are correct dental and periodontal health care methods, periodontal disease can actually be prevented and treated early.
Gingivitis is the original form of periodontal disease, in which inflammation is limited to the gum tissue. If the symptoms of gum inflammation are ignored, plaque, calculus, and food residue accumulate around the teeth, and bacteria accumulate along the root surface toward the apex, invading the alveolar bone and periodontal ligament below the gums. The toxins produced by the bacteria will trigger the body's immune response, causing the gums to become red, swollen, inflamed, and bleeding, leading to more severe periodontitis.
If you procrastinate with an ostrich mentality, the alveolar bone around the tooth roots will continue to lose, causing the teeth to become loose and wobbly. Ye Liwei pointed out that most people only discover that they have periodontal disease when their teeth finally become loose or fall out, and the treatment effect will be relatively poor.
Many medical studies have proven that smoking can worsen periodontal disease. Ye Liwei reminded that the currently popular e-cigarettes are also very harmful to oral health, aggravating periodontal disease and causing periodontal treatment to become less effective. Smoking patients have poor blood circulation and their gums are less likely to bleed. They may mistakenly think that their periodontal health is healthy and miss the best opportunity for treatment.
Ye Liwei suggested that if you have symptoms related to periodontal disease, it is best to seek diagnosis and treatment from a periodontist. Periodontists have received two to three years of periodontal disease professional training and have extensive experience in periodontal disease diagnosis and periodontal disease treatment. Currently, among the approximately 15,000 dentists in Taiwan, there are only about 400 specialists from the Taiwan Periodontology Association. Only by finding the right doctor can we truly find out the cause of the disease and effectively solve the problem.
