If you have periodontal disease, how should you brush, clean, and even choose a mouthwash correctly? Are you sure you really know? Ye Liwei, director of Contemporary Dental Clinic, observed that the issues of daily "dental health care" and "dental maintenance" are common questions for many patients with periodontal disease in the clinic. In fact, if you brush and clean your teeth correctly in daily life, you can help ordinary people prevent periodontal disease. But unfortunately, due to domestic dental clinic experience, many people lack the correct concept of brushing their teeth.
How many times should you brush your teeth a day? Ye Liwei said that it is best to brush your teeth after three meals and before going to bed. This is because the main cause of tooth decay and periodontal disease is plaque accumulated by bacteria. Only by cleaning the teeth can plaque be removed and the risk of tooth decay, gingivitis or periodontal disease reduced. Ye Liwei emphasized that brushing teeth before going to bed is the most important, because saliva is secreted less during sleep and the self-cleaning effect is poor. Once food residue remains, it becomes a source of nutrients for bacteria.
Ye Liwei suggested that there is a wide range of dental cleaning tools and supplies, including toothbrushes, interdental brushes, mouthwash, etc. The key points of selection are: it is recommended to use a relatively small brush head for toothbrushes. Even adults can choose children's toothbrushes to facilitate the care of the dead corners of the back teeth. The bristles should not be too hard, as incorrect brushing methods or excessive force will cause wear on the surface structure of the teeth, but bristles that are too soft may also affect the efficiency of tooth cleaning.
The correct way to brush your teeth is to use a toothbrush, floss and interdental brush to clean every surface of the teeth. But even if most people are used to flossing, they often suffer from NG. The most common cause is that the dental floss presses against the gum, causing damage to the gum; the correct approach is to rub the floss along the surface of the tooth to clean it. In addition, for patients with periodontal disease, because the gaps between teeth are relatively large, dentists recommend that interdental brushes are required. Because teeth with periodontal disease sometimes have obvious depressions on the adjacent surfaces, general dental floss cannot completely clean them.
Regular dental check-ups and teeth cleanings are a must! Sometimes the gums bleed during teeth cleaning, which means that the gums or periodontal inflammation is present. When the tooth root surface is covered with more plaque or calculus, the teeth will become more sensitive after the calculus is removed. In fact, after cleaning and coupled with good oral hygiene, tooth sensitivity and gum bleeding will improve.
Ye Liwei emphasized that from a dentist's point of view, as long as you can use a toothbrush, dental floss or interdental brush correctly and do daily cleaning, you can take good care of your teeth. However, no matter how diligently you clean your teeth, there will always be some blind spots in the mouth that cannot be brushed or are easily ignored. Therefore, it is recommended to have regular check-ups at least six months. Patients with poor periodontal conditions may need follow-up examinations and cleanings every three months to prevent the recurrence of periodontal disease.
